In the April 2011 Lancet medical journal dedicated to the topic of stillbirth, it was reported that there has been a 14.5% decrease in stillbirth between 1995 and 2009 worldwide. However, the total number of stillbirths, 2.65 million stillbirths, is still daunting and prevention efforts are as essential as ever.

The types of prevention depend on whether the country is developing or developed. Provision of medical (obstetrical) care is recommended to address the multiple preventable causes of stillbirth in each locale.
