Optimal investigation of stillbirth relies on parents being fully informed of their options, understanding the process and being provided with opportunities to process the information provided and for health care professionals to understand and implement the best practice recommendations. With this in mind the project aimed to achieve the following objectives:

To increase parents’ satisfaction with the support and information provided when making decisions related to autopsy and other investigations for stillbirth

To reduce parental regret and decision conflict associated with options for autopsy and other investigations following stillbirth

To increase the ability of health professionals to support parents in their decision making related to autopsy and other investigations for stillbirth.

To assess the reasons behind parents’ decisions about autopsy and other investigations

Together with the NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence in Stillbirth (Stillbirth CRE) and the Stillbirth Foundation Australia, Red Nose led the development and evaluation of a range of accessible and culturally safe parent resources to assist bereaved parents and their care providers with autopsy decision following stillbirth and newborn death. Resources were developed and evaluated in consultation with a wide range of stakeholders. Specific resources were developed for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parents, and parents and families from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds (CALD) including translation into multiple languages. All resources are being evaluated to ensure they are helpful and acceptable to both parents and care providers when a baby dies.
